Material Artifact serves as a platform for applied studio research by architectural educator Marcus Farr.  The studio is interested in disseminating project based research that discusses and advances our thinking toward the made environment and how we teach, experiment, learn, design, and make, specifically with technology and material.  Research has involved historic masonry practices, sand, earth, rubble, sod, turf, and metal with digital fabrication methods and augmented construction.
 
The studio is especially interested in how we investigate and connect to the environment around us and how we can leverage the mundane, ordinary patterns of context by re-introducing that information with heightened perspective.  By doing so, this thinking affects matters of material reference & assemblage.
We look at concepts of natural histories and the inevitable forces of nature, weather & age as processes for creating physical objects and sensory experiences.  
 
We work wherever there is suitable commission to explore these roles through academic, artistic or architectural medium. Along with built commissions, we offer workshops, academic seminars & lectures.
