Marcus Farr
Marcus Farr is a Fulbright Scholar in Architecture and the founder and Principal of Material Artifact, a studio that specializes in architecture, academic research, and contemporary studio practices.
Marcus received a post-professional Master of Architecture (M.Arch) from Rice University, as well as a Professional Degree in Architecture (5 year B.Arch) and a B.A. in Studio Art from Drury University. Additional studies include the Architectural Association Visiting Schools Sao Paulo, Brazil. His graduate thesis at Rice was published nationally and won the Rice Design Alliance Initiatives for Houston Award.
As an architecture professor, Marcus teaches courses in opportunistic materials, performative architecture & building design, digital design/fabrication. He is currently Associate Professor of Architecture at the American University, Sharjah, United Arab Emirates.
He has had recent appointments as Artist in Residence in Iceland, Spain, Hungary and Japan. He has won the the James Hunter FAIA Traveling Fellowship to South America by the American Institute of Architects, and the AIA LookUp! Film Challenge Excellence in Resilience Design category, and named a 2018 NCARB Scholar.
Marcus has participated in design juries &/or spoken at several institutions including the University of Texas at Austin, the University of Houston, Abu Dhabi University, Rice University, Washington University in St. Louis, the University of Florida, the University of Colorado, Clemson University, Maryville University, the University of Detroit-Mercy, The University of Rome, Sapienza, The University of Edinburgh and the Edinburgh College of Art.
He has more than 10 years of experience working in architecture, art, urban design, & site specific landscape architecture throughout the United States, Europe, Middle East and Asia. This includes collaborations with the design offices of SOM, Thomas Phifer, Gensler, HOK, Robert A.M. Stern, PDR, Carlos Jimenez, and OJB. Subsequent work has been published in Landscape Architecture Magazine, Texas Architect, Architectural Record, Architect, Cite Magazine, The New York Times, and World Architecture Magazine.
